GREENVILLE — Three days before East Carolina University’s football team would defeat Southern Methodist University, head coach Ruffin McNeill sat in the team’s meeting room adjacent to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, speaking to a reporter.As players cleared out of the nearby hallways following practice, McNeill briefly called two of them into the room.“Ask them who their daddy is,” McNeill said.With that prompt, both players simultaneously said: “Ruffin.”“You can call anybody in here,” McNeill said. “I didn’t know who that was.
