Flay Preston Hamrick, 71, of Russ Road in the Barker Ten Mile Community, died Oct. 24, 2004, at his home after an extended illness.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at the Biggs Funeral Chapel in Lumberton. Burial will be at the Ten Mile Baptist Church Cemetery on Barker Ten Mile Road.
Hamrick was born on May 7, 1933, in Cleveland County. He was the son of the late Gordon S. and Edna Cornwell Hamrick.
He retired from the United States Navy in 1977, with 22 years of service. He then grew fresh vegetables, selling them at a produce stand on the farm for about 15 years. He was an avid golfer and a long-time member of Scothurst Golf Club in Lumber Bridge.
The family said: “He was known as “Uncle P” and “Pea Man” by nieces, nephews and many of his customers.”
Surviving are his wife, Rachel Musselwhite Hamrick of the home; two daughters, Debbie Hamrick and Barbara H. Hein, both of Raleigh; a son, Flay Preston Hamrick Jr. of the home; a sister, Meredith H. Pruett of Shelby; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Hein of Wilmington.
