FAIRMONT - The Golden Tornado defense shut out Overhills, while the Fairmont offense ran all over the Jaguars in a 20-0 victory.
Thomas Townsend led the Tornadoes on both sides of the ball, finishing with 183 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and helping hold Overhills to just 61 yards on the ground.
“That kid's got some heart,” Fairmont coach Kim Brown said of Townsend. “He doesn't want to come off the field.”
The Jaguars were frustrated by Fairmont's defense, and only put together one serious scoring threat.
Late in the third quarter, with Fairmont ahead 12-0, Overhills was able to drive the ball to Fairmont's 11-yard line before senior Justin Tomoney intercepted a pass from Jaguars quarterback Adam Purzita on the Golden Tornadoes 8-yard line.
After the offense took over, Fairmont was called for a holding penalty, backing them up to their own 3-yard line. Townsend responded with his longest run of the night, breaking through the middle of the line for a 59-yard gain.
Fairmont put the first points on the board less than 5 minutes into the game, when Townsend escaped for a 12-yard touchdown run.
The game stayed scoreless until halftime, however, with neither offense able to get much going. The Jaguars had only one first down in the half.
Fairmont struck quickly again in the second half, with Dorian Taylor bouncing outside for a 56-yard touchdown run on Fairmont's first possession.
Taylor finished the game with 100 yards rushing on 13 carries, despite leaving the game in the fourth quarter with a leg injury.

“He took a helmet to the shin,” Brown said. “I hope he's OK for next week, we want to be able to throw everything we've got at Bunn.”
With the Tornadoes up two touchdowns, Overhills looked to the air late in the game. Fairmont pressured Purzita and Jordan Boyd relentlessly, racking up five sacks in the fourth quarter.
Townsend scored his second touchdown of the night with 2:50 left in the fourth quarter to shut down any chance of a comeback.
Fairmont went for 2-point conversions after every score instead of kicking an extra point. They were unsuccessful the first two times, and Marcus Mitchell ran the ball to the end zone on the last attempt.
