Sarah Elizabeth “Betty” Pate Williams, 95, of Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, formerly of 720 Oakmont Drive, died March 1, 2007.
A memorial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Asheboro. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Williams was born Aug. 23, 1911, in Rowland, the daughter of the late Dr. George M. Pate and Marie Hamer Pate.
A lifelong Methodist, she attended Asbury Methodist Church in Raynham as a child and later joined Rowland United Methodist Church. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Asheboro until her death.
Williams received her teaching degree from Greensboro College in 1932 and taught home economics and chemistry in North Carolina's public schools.
The family said: “She was a devoted wife, wonderful mother, skilled homemaker and a loyal friend.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Williams, son of John Thompson Williams and Mary Anne Braswell Williams of Rowland; three brothers, George Lewis Pate and his wife, Ruth Reed Pate, W.Z. “Bill” Pate and his wife, Sara “Lib” McCormick Pate, and James Pate and his wife, Elizabeth Regan Pate; and a sister, Mary Hamer Pate and her husband, Alton A. Price.
Surviving are a daughter, Anne Williams Vermilya and her husband, Robert, of Chapel Hill; two sons, Robert Pate Williams and his wife, Marty, of Asheboro and Russell Thompson Williams and his wife, Debbie, of Lumberton; four grandchildren, Tyler Allen Vermilya and his wife, Elaine Roe, of Seattle, John Matthew DeWeese Williams and his wife, Coriell Wright, of Washington, D.C., Samuel Williams of Greenville and Mary-Elena Williams of Lumberton; two stepgrandsons, Robert Burchette III and his wife, Kelly, of High Point and Timothy Burchette of Smithfield; a great-grandchild, Ava Roe Vermilya of Seattle; and numerous nephews and nieces and their families.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Asheboro; Rowland United Methodist Church; or Asbury Memorial Association, c/o Russ Williams, 3800 Kale Drive, Lumberton, N.C., 28358.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro.
