FAIRMONT -- A Fairmont man has been charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of his girlfriend's brother.
John Moses Southern turned himself in at the Fairmont Police Department at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Tina Rhodes, an investigator with the department. He is being held at the Robeson County jail without bail, and was scheduled for his first court appearance this morning.
Southern, 43, of 201 Liberia St., is accused of assaulting Robert Locklear with a metal pipe on July 9 at a home on the 600 block on Canal Street.
Rhodes said Locklear, who was 29, was admitted to Southeastern Regional Medical Center on Thursday for a ruptured spleen. He died Sunday of injuries he received in the assault.
Rhodes said Fairmont police didn't know about the incident until Sunday, when a hospital official called and reported Locklear's death. She said there had been no recent reports of an assault on Canal Street.
