Dr. James B. Chavis Sr. was born Feb. 6, 1936, in Robeson County, the son of Fred D. and Macy B. Chavis, deceased. He died at home on Feb. 26, 2010.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Reedy Branch Baptist Church, the Rev. Hilton Woodell officiating. Entombment will follow in the Lumbee Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his loving wife, Judy; his son, James B. Jr. of Baton Rouge, La.; his sister, Joanne Wray of Cascade, Va.; his five grandchildren, Mitch Joyner of Greenville, Scott Parker of Sterling, Va., Branson Chavis of Pembroke, Spc. Drew Parker currently deployed to Afghanistan, and Brooke Parker of Chapel Hill; and four great-grandchildren, Devin and Hunter Joyner, both of Greenville, Andrew and Michelle Parker, both of Sterling. He is also survived by a large extended family of relatives, students, friends and colleagues whose lives he touched.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Locklear & Son Funeral Home.
