PEMBROKE — A 39-year-old Lumberton man was killed Thursday night when he stepped into the path of a train, according to the Pembroke police chief.
Chief Frank Hernandez said Mark “Shorty” Chavis of Huggins Road was killed shortly after 10 p.m. The accident happened on the train tracks parallel to Third Street.
Hernandez said alcohol was a factor.
Chavis, who had been visiting friends in Pembroke, was walking to a convenience store when the accident happened, according to witnesses.
“According to the details in the report, Chavis was traveling west on foot on Third Street,” Hernandez said. “He was walking on the shoulder of the road. According to the conductor, the victim walked in front of the train.”
The freight train was traveling south. No charges will be filed.
“According to his friends, they had been drinking during the day,” Hernandez said.
Sgt. Charles Maynor and Officer Bobby Freeman were the investigating officers.
