In his new role, Powers is responsible for formulating and advocating RAI’s legislative, regulatory and public policy positions with state and local governments.
He supervises six state government relations regional directors in his position.
In announcing Powers’ promotion, Tommy Payne, executive vice president of public affairs for RAI, said, “We are fortunate to have someone as capable and experienced as David Powers to take over state government relations responsibilities that are critical to the future of RAI and its operating companies.”
Powers joined R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1996 and has been responsible for state government relations in nine western states as well as, more recently, in nine states in the Northeast.
Prior to joining the company, Powers was regional director of state government relations for the Smokeless Tobacco Council in Washington, D.C.
Earlier in his career, Powers served in the administration of President George H.W. Bush as a senior Intergovernmental Affairs officer.
A native of St. Pauls, Powers is the son of the late Russell and Betty Powers and is married to the former Shreita Taylor.
Powers received a bachelor’s degree in 1983 from North Carolina State University. He later obtained a master’s degree in business administration from Campbell University in 1988.
