ROUNDUP: Schedule set for Dixie Youth series; Angels reach AAU Olympics

LAURINBURG — The brackets have been set for the Dixie Youth District 9 Majors League tournament which is slated to begin on Friday.
West Robeson American takes on Elizabethtown, while West Robeson National will face Lumberton National at 6 p.m.
In the nightcaps, Red Springs will play the host Scotland and Lumberton American battles Fairmont.
Eight Angels qualify for Junior Olympics
PEMBROKE — Eight members of the Angel Elite track and field team qualified for the 44th annual AAU Junior Olympics in New Orleans later this month.
Aminah Ghaffar captured three Region 5 championships during the track championships held at UNC Charlotte this past weekend. The rising junior at Fayetteville Academy won the 16U penathlon, high jump and the javelin. Her pentathlon total of 3,917 is ranked in the top 10 nationally in her age group.
Lumberton’s Jamicia Jones defended her AAU state title, capturing the gold in the 1,500-meter run. Scotland’s Ariel Gates took the title in the 17U high jump. Jaynell Brown, from Lumberton, earned the silver in the shot put with a toss of 40-2.
The 17U 4×400-meter relay team of Taylor McBride, Larcenia Easterling, Jones and Gates grabbed the silver medal and will compete in New Orleans.
Garrett Hammonds and Joe Murray were the lone male members of Angel Elite to move on to New Orleans. Hammonds was third in the 3,000-meter run, while Murray took fourth in the 1,500-meter run. Both are from Lumberton.
