LUMBERTON Foster care children often carry their belongings in garbage bags as they move from home to home.
The Lumberton Board of Realtors joined with Guardian Ad-Litem in an effort to collect as many suitcases for foster kids as possible to make those moves easier.
Participants gathered Thursday to count the donated suitcases, and were pleased to find theyd collected 152. Storage Solutions is donating space to Guardian Ad-Litem to store the suitcases until they are distributed.
Although our open deadline has passed, we will continue to accept donations at Storage Solutions, 1990 Roberts Ave., said Brandy Nicoll. My hope is that this can continue to be an ongoing effort by the community.
Suitcases for Kids was founded by 10-year-old Aubyn Burnside in 1995 in an effort to provide Catawba County foster care children with suitcases. Each child averages seven moves while in foster care.
Since its inception, the organization has grown to become a nonprofit with chapters in every state and 47 countries.
Suitcases and large duffel bags are sought. Hard or soft luggage and all sizes are acceptable.
