Tribal housing program earns HUD recognition

PEMBROKE - The Homeownership Program of the Lumbee Tribe was recently honored by the Office of Native American Programs in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The tribe leads the nation in securing homes and mortgages for its members. The Lumbee also were recognized for having the highest number of tribal members participate in the HUD programs.
&#8220This type of recognition by HUD is a testimony to the staff's determination to assist tribal members in achieving the American dream,” said Tribal Chairman Jimmy Goins.
The award was presented to Lumbee tribal officials in Washington, DC.
&#8220As a manager for the program, I was excited by this national recognition,” said Tara Blue, housing manager. &#8220This encourages us to continue to work securing decent, safe and sanitary housing opportunities for eligible tribal members.”
The Lumbee Tribe assists tribal members with an array of housing services to provide safe and affordable housing. The program is funded through the Native American Housing and Self-determination Act and other programs such as Section 184.
