RED SPRINGS A Red Springs man in a wheelchair was killed Wednesday night when he was struck by a vehicle, according to the state Highway Patrol.
According to a report by investigating Trooper Kyle Covington, Earlie Pittman, 50, of McAllister Circle, was traveling north on Rural Paved Road 1387 when his wheelchair was struck about 8:13 p.m. and he was thrown from the wheelchair.
Beverly McLean, 29, of 152 McAllister Circle, Red Springs, was driving a 1993 Ford passenger car north on the highway when it struck the back of the wheelchair, according to Covingtons report. The report said that McLean was driving about 45 mph in the 55-mph zone.
She was not charged with any crime. The report indicated that darkness made it impossible for McLean to see the wheelchair.
It appears the wheelchair came out in front of her, said Sgt. Tony Parrish of the Highway Patrol while reading from Covingtons report.
About $1,000 worth of damage was done to the front of the vehicle. The accident happened about 400 yards north of Rural Paved Road 1320, just over a mile west of Red Springs.
