FAIRMONT -- Was that Kevin Walker or Elliot Ness on the mound?
With the way the Lumberton pitchers have been throwing this season, the tag “Untouchables” certainly applies to Walker and the rest of the staff. Their team ERA is 0.00, and on Wednesday, Walker (1-0) overwhelmed Fairmont as the Pirates cruised to an 8-0 victory to improve to 3-0 on the season. He threw a complete game, allowing only three hits while striking out 11 and walking one.
“The pitching has been outstanding,” Lumberton manager Paul Hodges said. “We kind of had a feeling that pitching and defense would be our strengths.”
The bats haven't been too bad either. Against Fairmont (0-4), all of Lumberton's runs came in the first three innings, including four in the second. Scott Taylor, Ryan Ventura and Matt Hunt all had two hits apiece. Taylor and Hunt also had two RBIs each.
Brian Lewis had two hits for the Golden Tornadoes.
“(Walker) was up in the count the whole night,” said Hodges. “He made them chase his pitch.”
Lumberton will need another masterful mound performance tonight, when it plays host to Scotland (6-1), the state's No. 9 team in the preseason. Matt McIntyre will take the hill for the Pirates. Last time out, he tossed a no-hitter against Hoke County.
