AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The University of North Carolina at Pembroke baseball team never got things going Sunday as Augusta State University notched a doubleheader sweep in Peach Belt Conference action.
The Braves (6-7, 3-5 PBC) fell 14-5 in the opener and 4-2 in the nightcap.
In Game 1, UNCP starter Eric Stewart gave up 11 hits and 12 runs -- five earned -- in 42/3 innings. The two teams combined for 11 errors and eight walks in the contest.
Most of the damage for Stewart came in the third inning when Andy Hudson drilled a grand slam to cap a six-run outburst.
Hudson pounded another solo shot in the sixth and finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs.
Pembroke's Andy Jewell went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Game 2 was a tighter affair, but UNCP still couldn't kick its offense into gear.
ASU starter Greg Thomas turned in a complete-game effort to outduel Purnell Swett graduate Sandy Jacobs. Thomas (3-2) allowed a pair of runs on seven hits while striking out three. Jacobs lasted six innings, surrendering four runs on nine hits.
Down 2-0 in the second, UNCP's Ty Rutledge launched a solo homer to cut the deficit in half. Rutledge then notched his second RBI of the day in the sixth inning, but the Braves still found themselves trailing 3-2.
The Jags (9-8, 3-4) added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame to put the game out of reach.
Trevor Hamaker went 2-for-4 for the Braves, who wrap up their three-game road series with Augusta State today at 2 p.m.
