The Rev. Herbert Chavis, 80, of 308 Lyndsey Lane, Shannon, departed this life
on July 13, 2009, at his home in Shannon.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Friendly Temple Church in
Shannon, the Revs. Rocky Williamson, Lockey Carter and Davey Locklear
officiating. Entombment will follow with military rites in Friendly
Temple Cemetery on Lyndsey Lane in Shannon.
The Rev. Herbert was the pastor of more than five churches with a
total of 60 years in the ministry. He was also a veteran of the United
States Navy.
He was preceded in death by his son, Larry Chavis; and his parents,
Andrew Bethel Chavis and Sarah Ann Clark Chavis.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dora Locklear Chavis;
four daughters, Bonnie C. McMillian and Vivian Locklear, both of
Shannon, Joyce Chavis Pevia of Raleigh and Jeanette C. Valderramos of
Pine Bluff; three sons, the Rev. Eugene Chavis, Faron Chavis and
Herbert Chavis Jr., all of Shannon; two sisters, Clavie Buttom of
Maryland and Beulah Mae Chavis of Maxton; 13 grandchildren; 35
great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
The visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Friendly Temple Church in Shannon.
