Mr. Robert Fairley “Doodle” Beck Sr., 75, of 632 Freeman Mill Road, Hamlet, formerly of 102 Alexander Drive, Hamlet, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, in Somerset Court of Hamlet.
Funeral services were conducted at First United Methodist Church of Hamlet on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006. The Rev. Adolph Smith officiated. Burial followed in Richmond Memorial Park.
He is preceded in death by his late wife, Barbara Ann C. “Shannon” Beck; and sister, the late Bonnie Slattery.
He was born on Oct. 5, 1932, in Robeson County to the late Elzie Oree Beck and the late Grace Beck Beck.
Mr. Beck was a retired Sergeant with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for 22 years; former Chief of Police with the Hamlet Police Department for 10 years; and worked part-time for the Campbell Soup Company.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hamlet; attended Boys State in high school; graduated in 1951 from Red Springs High School; and was a professional baseball player in the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies organizations.
He is survived by one daughter, Cathy Beck Greene of Valparaiso, Florida; one son, Robert F. Beck Jr. of Chesapeake, Virginia; and five grandchildren.
