Betty Jean Jones, 53, of Washington, D.C., died April, 5, 2009, at
Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Springs, Md.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at The Greater First Baptist
Church, 2701 13th St. N.W., corner of Fairmont and 13th St.
Washington, D.C., the Rev. Winston Ridley Sr. officiating and a
proclamation by the District of Columbia Mayor, Adrian Fenty and the
District of Columbia City Council. Interment will follow in Rock Creek
Jones was a descendent of the Humphrey residence on Martin Luther King
Drive in Lumberton, N.C. where NAACP lawyers stayed from Charlotte
while handling cases in Lumberton during the early 1900s and
She was the daughter of the late Betty Lou Humphrey-Jones of Lumberton
and Washington, D.C., and the niece of the late Charity Humphrey
Thompson of Lumberton. She attended the University of District of
Columbia and was employed as a Public Health Social Worker with the
D.C. City Government.
Surviving are her father, Parker D. Jones Sr.; three daughters,
Danielle D. Bailey, Jocasta Jones-Harrison (Michael) and Mercedes M.
Bailey (Jarett); an adopted daughter, Latoya Twyman; a son, Julian
Jones (Jaquale); a twin sister, Barbara Jones-Jenkins (Thomas); three
sisters, Dr. Judith Webb, Veronica Henley and Antoinette Jones; two
brothers, Parker D. Jones Jr. and Kenneth Jones Sr. (Sonia); and eight
The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at The
Greater First Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., and other times at
the home of Dr. Judith Webb, 7408 8th St., N.W., in the Shepard Park
Community, Washington, D.C.
