Pirates shine at Two Rivers championship meet

FAYETTEVILLE The Lumberton girls’ track and field team finished second at the Two Rivers Conference meet on Thursday.
Nicole Chavis was one of several standouts for Lumberton.
Chavis won the discus with a throw of 108’6″, while finishing second to teammate Jaynell Brown in the Shot put. Brown was second, behind Chavis, in the discus.
Erica Powell was the fastest girl at the meet, finishing the 100-meter run in 12.30 seconds to take first place.
Olivia Mack finished fourth in the 100-meter run, second in the 400-meter run and third in the 200-meter run. Jamecia Jones finished fourth in the 400-meter run and third in the 800-meter run.
Powell, Mack, Chavis and Brown were named to the Two Rivers All-Conference team.
Lumberton’s Atilya Singeltary was honored was women’s coach of the year.
On the boys’ side, Lumberton finished in fourth place.
Craig Stephens was second in the 100 and 200-meter runs. Josh Mitchell came in third in the 100-meter run, while Monte Barnes finished third in both 200 and 400-meter runs.
Jermaine Kesler’s shot put of 42’11” was good for second place.
The Pirates 400 and 800-meter relay teams finished second.
Stephens, Kesler, Mitchell, Brent Bristow, Kendrick McGill, Barnes and Maurice Lews were selected to the Two Rivers All-Conference team.
The NCHSAA 4-A regional meet is at West Johnston High School in Clayton on May 16.
