RED SPRINGS — The Rev. Dora Russell Dorsey, of New Hope United Methodist Church in Rowland, has been appointed the pastor of Rhyne Memorial United Methodist Church in Red Springs.

Dorsey replaces the Rev. Vermel H. Taylor, a Georgia native who was appointed to serve at the church four years ago.

“I look forward to my new assignment,” Dorsey said in a statement. “Rhyne Memorial has children, youth, young adults and senior citizens all active in ministry and worship. It is my honor to come alongside these active Christians and see what I can do to encourage them further in their spiritual growth and service to God and community.”

Rhyne Memorial is the fourth appointment for Dorsey in the Gateway District, where she serves as chairman of Partners in Ministry and on the Committee on Relocation. During nine years in Richmond County, she helped collect toys for economically disadvantaged children; participated in the Hamlet Ministerial Alliance; served as volunteer chaplain at Sandhills Hospital in Hamlet; preached during Holy Week services and helped paint the Rockingham homeless shelter. Dorsey helped for three years to lead a worship service sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee.

In Rowland, Dorsey volunteered with the Senior Nutrition Site, where she brought crafts to attendees and offered devotions. As part of the Rowland Festival Committee, Dorsey walked in the annual Christmas parade dressed as a turkey. She represented Rowland United Methodist Church in the Vonta Leach celebration and participated in activities at Rowland’s elementary and middle school.

Dorsey is a native of Warren County, the daughter of the late JB and Elizabeth Richardson Russell of Warrenton, N.C. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Home Economics Education from North Carolina A&T University and a Master’s of Divinity from The Divinity School at Duke University. She and former husband Mose E. Dorsey have an adult daughter and four grandchildren. In her spare time, Dorsey likes to read, travel, quilt, paint, and watch old movies and television shows.
