PEMBROKE — The S.O.S Band will perform on Friday as part of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s homecoming celebration.

The famed R&B group will perform at 8 p.m. at the Givens Performing Arts Center.

The band formed in the late 197’s in Atlanta as Santa Monica.

The Sounds of Success Band exploded on the scene in 1980 with a name change, a recording contract and their first mega platinum single, “Take Your Time (Do It Right),” which climbed to No. 1 on the Top of the Pops, Billboard, soul and disco charts.

The group’s first album, “The S.O.S. Band,” soon followed, and fans worldwide sent it to gold record status.

The band’s success continued and they were introduced to the likes of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, producers for the band’s next three gold albums with such mega hit singles as “Just Be Good to Me,” “Tell Me if you Still Care,” “Just the Way You Like It,” “Weekend Girl,” “High Hopes,” “The Finest,” and “Sounds of Time.”

After more than 20 years, lead vocalist Mary Davis and trumpeter/vocalist Abdul Ra’oof are the only two original members of the band. The group continues to perform and have shared the stage with legendary artists such as James Brown, The Gap Band, The Time and Peabo Bryson.

Concert-goers are also invited to attend the Given’s Performing Arts Center Act 1 Diners Club for the first time this season. The Act 1 Diners Club includes dinner before the performance. A wine and cheese reception is also included. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. and reservations are required.

Tickets for the S.O.S Band range from $15 to $25 depending on the seating. Tickets for UNCP students are $5 with a valid student ID. Alumni discounts are available.

Tickets to the Act 1 Diners Club dinner and wine reception are $30 each.
