PEMBROKE — Fans of the No. 14 University of North Carolina at Pembroke football team will have the opportunity to watch the Braves on television this week.

Time Warner Cable announced that it will air the broadcast of the Braves’ road game Thursday at defending national champion Valdosta State on the company’s special events channel, Channel 522.

The game is part of the Gulf South Conference’s GSC-TV Game of the Week Presented By Raymond James. The game is set to air locally on Time Warner Cable, regionally on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast and nationally on the ESPN3 web channel.

The contest will mark the third time this season that the Braves have appeared on television. UNCP upset then-No. 5 Winston-Salem State on Sept. 5 on the CBS Sports Network in the team’s home opener, and routed NCAA Division I (FCS) foe Charlotte on Oct. 12 on WCCB-TV, a local CW affiliate in Charlotte.

Kickoff on Thursday is at 7:30 p.m.

UNCP women end the season

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Columbus State scored a lone goal in the 68th minute to beat UNCP’s women’s soccer team in the first-round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

Kelsey Pelletier netted the game-winning goal for Columbus State (14-5-0) midway through the second half on a cross from Mandy Janowitz. After Janowitz’s pass found Pelletier, she beat UNCP goalie Claire Tracy with a shot to the left corner of the goal.

The Braves (7-10-2) fought but were no match for the offensive onslaught from Columbus State. The Cougars outshot UNCP 26-2, and took all 11 corner kicks.

“Given the circumstances we have faced this season, I am incredibly proud of the girls. We went into this game with a great game plan, and it worked. Unfortunately we made one mistake and were punished for it,” said UNCP coach Lars Andersson. “Overall I’m so proud of the kids, they have learned a lot from this season. We got ourselves in the conference tournament which is amazing, again given the circumstances.”

Men’s soccer falls to Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Zach Shanahan knocked in the only score on the contest in the 67th minute as third-seeded Flagler ousted the UNCP men’s soccer team from the Peach Belt Conference Tournament with a 1-0 win.

Despite outshooting the Saints (9-5-3), UNCP (8-8-1) was unable to connect on its 13 shots.

“This game is cruel sometimes,” said UNCP coach Phil Hindson. “I thought that we were the better team tonight and deserved to win. We gave an outstanding effort and I am very proud of this team because of that.”

Caleb Austin dished out the lone assist on Shanahan’s eighth goal of the season on a shot from the left across the box to the far post at the 66:23 mark.

The game was scoreless at halftime.
