FAYETTEVILLE — Purnell Swett baseball coach Bryan McDonald walked to the mound in the fifth inning at Jack Britt on Wednesday and asked his starting pitcher if he had anymore gas in his tank.
Nearly empty, what was left was more than enough for sophomore DJ Lowry.
After getting out of a one-out jam with runners on the corners nursing a two-run lead, Lowry watched from the dugout as the Rams hung six runs in the sixth and nine in the seventh against the Buccaneers’ depleted bullpen en route to an 18-1 victory.
Anthony Williamson, Tyler Maynor and Phoenix Maynor all homered to lead Swett to its sixth straight win to open the season.
“A lot of us came in here expecting a dogfight like the last time we played, but we had to put the pedal to the metal when we had the chance,” Lowry said after scattering seven hits and an earned run over six innings for his second win. “I think it was one of my best starts.”
After Britt coach Christopher Dague elected to pull his starter after five, Swett batted around over the final two frames with a handful of walks and errors leading to big innings. Phoenix Maynor’s two-out, pinch-hit grand slam — his first career homer — plated his team’s final four runs and emptied the bench at the plate.
The Buccaneers left runners in scoring position in four different frames but a pair of double plays ended threats. During the first matchup between the two teams, Lowry notched the win in relief, a well-played 4-3 affair in Pembroke.
Swett (6-0) is averaging 16.2 runs a game and gets the rest of the week off before traveling to South Brunswick on Monday.
“Jack Britt’s a good baseball team, it was just one of those nights where they couldn’t get us out there in the (sixth),” Swett coach Bryan McDonald said. “That’s how baseball goes sometimes. I thought we hit and pitched it well. There’s some little things we can work on, but I was happy with the way we played.”
