Local roundup: LHS alum competing in NCAA championships

RALEIGH — Former Lumberton track and field standout Nicole Chavis is one of two athletes that will be representing North Carolina State this weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

Chavis will be competing in the weight throw after a record-breaking toss at the ACC Championships. Her throw of 68 feet, 8.75 inches broke her previous school record and vaulted her up the national rankings.

She’s led the Wolfpack track and field team with five first-place finishes on the year.

The event will be streamed live on ESPN3. Chavis’ event starts at 5 p.m.

Fairmont teams beat West Columbus

CERRO GORDO — The Fairmont baseball and softball teams continued their strong starts to the season, each getting a win on Thursday at West Columbus.

The baseball team rallied behind a two-hit outing from pitcher Cole Lovin to win 4-1.

The Golden Tornadoes (6-1, 2-0) scored a run in the second inning and three more in the fifth. Lovin held the Vikings hitless until the seventh inning and allowed one run in the sixth. He finished with eight strikeouts.

The Fairmont girls rallied for a 21-6 win against West Columbus in six innings.

The Lady Tornadoes (4-0) started with a nine-run first inning and never let up, finishing with 20 hits and taking advantage of seven Viking errors. Harmony Oxendine picked up her second win of the year and six Fairmont players finished with multiple hits.
