Woman charged in stabbing; man critical

LUMBERTON — A 26-year-old St. Pauls woman has been charged in a dispute at a Lumberton home that nearly killed a Tabor City man, according to Lumberton police.


Sarah Denise Leigh Hendrix, of Cedar Grove Road, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury for stabbing 23-year-old Jonathan Huggins on Saturday night, according to a statement from the Lumberton Police Department.


A “physical altercation” between two men broke out at about 11:30 p.m. at a home on East Ninth Street in the Godwin Heights area and Hendrix became involved, stabbing Huggins in the chest multiple times, the statement said.


The statement said Huggins was driven by private vehicle to Southeastern Regional Medical Center with injuries that were considered “life-threatening.” A hospital spokesperson said this morning that Huggins is in critical condition.


Hendrix was arrested in Bladen County after law enforcement officials saw her vehicle in a ditch. She has been jailed under a $100,000 secured bond.
