RED SPRINGS — A Red Springs man is recovering after being shot outside of a residence on Sunday morning.
Justin Johnson, 29, was struck in the left side of his chest during a drive-by shooting that took place at about 11:50 a.m. at 123 Haywood St., according to Red Springs Police Chief Ronnie Patterson. The chief said Johnson suffered injuries to a lung and his spleen.
“He was at the residence when someone came through and started shooting,” Patterson said. “Next thing he knows, he hears another gunshot and realizes that he has been hit.”
Johnson was in critical condition when he was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center and then flown to UNC Hospitals for surgery, according to Patterson.
“The surgery went well and he’s in recovery,” Patterson said.
Three shell casings were found at the scene of the shooting, including two in the road and one that was found inside the residence.
“The victim might have shot back in defense,” Patterson said.
Red Springs police are currently investigating a person of interest with whom Johnson apparently had a previous altercation.
“We won’t know until after we finish the investigation,” Patterson said. “We hope to make an arrest soon and the detectives are working pretty hard on it.”
Anyone with information should call the Red Springs Police Department at 910-843-3454.
