DOT approves contract to replace Leesville Road bridge

Staff report

August 4, 2014

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to replace the bridge on Leesville Road over Old Field Swamp in Robeson County.

The $758,970 contract was awarded to Smith-Rowe LLC of Mount Airy.

Work on the project can begin as early as Aug. 25, with the bridge opening to traffic in April 2015. The entire project should be completed by October 2015.

The bridge site will be closed to traffic during construction and motorists will use Industrial Road, N.C. 130 Business (Cottage Street) and Walnut Street to travel around the construction site.

The bridge was constructed in 1956 and is classified as functionally obsolete. This means it has remained safe for use, but it was built to design standards that are no longer in use.

It is one of the 11 road and bridge contracts worth $43.4 million recently awarded by Department of Transportation for projects across North Carolina. The contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The low bids received on the projects were 2.8 percent, or about $1.2 million, higher than estimates by the Department of Transportation.
