PEMBROKE — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently awarded grants totaling more than $975,000 to the Pembroke Housing Authority. The moneys will be used to modernize and upgrade dwelling units owned and managed by the authority.
“We are pleased to receive these awards,” said Lemark Harris, the authority’s executive director. “We hope these funds will help to provide job opportunities throughout our local economy.”
The authority plans to use the money to pay for electrical upgrades to 172 dwelling units in Locklear Court, Chavis Park, and Strickland Heights as well install energy efficient, tank-less water heating systems for all of its 243 units. These upgrades will decrease the long-term utility costs for the residents of the Pembroke Housing Authority.
“We are thankful that HUD continues to provide capital funds for our agency to modernize our units,” Harris said. “Without these funds, renovations to our units would be very difficult. We will continue to exercise fiscal responsibility to ensure that this grant is invested wisely for the benefit of our residents.
“With these funds our families will experience continued comfort with energy efficient homes,” Harris said.
