LUMBERTON — Lumberton police say no witnesses have come forward in a shooting that led to a man’s death in Turner Terrace on Wednesday night.

Police responded to that incident at about 9 p.m. — two hours before being called to an Elizabethtown Road home where a child was unresponsive.

According to a statement from the Police Department, Ryan Smith was found shot and sitting in a vehicle near the intersection of Beech Court and Spruce Streets. Smith was later pronounced dead at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

There are no suspects or known witnesses this morning, the statement said.

Smith’s death is the city’s eighth homicide this year and the second in two weeks. Journey Kennedy, 20, was fatally shot on June 20. Kennedy lived on Linwood Avenue and was found unresponsive on Plainview Drive after he called 911.

James Jamar Smith was charged with his murder on June 24. James Smith and Ryan Smith are not believed to be related.

The Police Department on Wednesday night also responded to a call reporting a child who was unresponsive at a home in Rosewood Mobile Home Park on Elizabethtown Road, according to a statement.

When officers arrived to assist Emergency Medical Services,, CPR was being performed on the child, the statement said. The child was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead.

According to the statement, Juvenile Division detectives are investigating, but it is believed that the child’s death was caused by “a medical event.”
