LUMBERTON — An ink-smothered entertainer has a Lumberton tattoo parlor marked on his map.
The Enigma will perform and pose for pictures at Wicked Skinsations from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
Born Paul Lawerence, the California native’s full-body tattoo of a jigsaw puzzle makes him hard to miss — and easy to misjudge, according to business owner Eddie Williams.
“When you see him for the first time, you’re like ‘holy cow,’” said Williams, who opened Wicked Skinsations in the late 1990s. “But I think once people talk to him for a second, they’ll realize he’s a super nice guy and a really intelligent fellow.”
Williams met The Enigma at a convention for tattoo artists several years ago. The two men kept in touch, with The Enigma agreeing to visit Williams’ shop when his schedule allowed.
“It’s going to be a really fun event,” Williams said. “He’s going to do an old circus-style sideshow with sword swallowing.”
The Enigma was once named The World’s Most Tattooed Man by Guinness Book of World Records, but has since lost the title. He was featured on “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!” in 2000 and guest-starred in a 1996 episode of “The X-Files” — an appearance that inspired an action figure bearing his likeness.
In addition to his myriad tattoos, The Enigma sports a pair of horn implants and other body modifications.
“He may very well shock some people,” Williams said.
Wicked Skinsations is located at 407 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. For information, call 910-735-0112.
