LUMBERTON — Aspiring writers had their efforts rewarded recently when the Colonel Thomas Robeson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced winners of the annual American History Essay Contest and Good Citizen Award.
Bianca Goodwin of Lumberton Senior High School won the Good Citizen Award, which honors a high school senior who exemplifies the qualities of patriotism, dependability, leadership and service.
The essay contest is open to students of the Public Schools of Robeson County in grades fifth through eighth. The essay theme was “Celebrating a Century: America’s National Parks.”
Carter Jacobs of Union Chapel Elementary School won the fifth grade award; Tristin Locklear of Deep Branch Elementary School won in sixth grade; Ethan Bullard of Littlefield Middle School won in the seventh grade category; and William Vanderslice of Lumberton Junior High School won the eighth grade award.
Bullard was also named district champion, competing against winners from 17 chapters in Southeastern North Carolina. He received an additional cash prize and will compete at the state level.
Essay winners received certificates, medals on red, white and blue ribbons and cash awards from the Colonel Thomas Robeson Chapter. The Good Citizen Award recipient received a lapel pin, a certificate and a cash award, also from the chapter.
The chapter made its announcements during the George Washington Tea on Feb. 21. at Pinecrest Country Club in Lumberton and hosted friends and family of the winners and public school administrators. The ballroom at the club was full.
Mayme Tubbs is the regent of the Colonel Thomas Robeson Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter; Colleen Brown is American History Essay contest chair; and Anne Monroe is the Good Citizen award chair. The chapter was chartered in 1936.
