LUMBERTON — A Maryland man who was pulled from relative’s pool in Lumberton last week has died.

Walter Stephens, 55, died on Friday, according to a spokesperson for Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

Stephens, who was from District Heights, Maryland, was visiting family on Londonderry Drive on Wednesday evening when he began struggling in the pool. According to the Lumberton Police Department, no one at the home at the time was able to swim to help him.

Three Lumberton police officers, Sgt. Pete Marcinsky and Officers J.D. Smith and Evan Whitley, were able to pull Stephens from the pool, the Police Department said. Officers performed CPR until Stephens was rushed to the hospital, but he died two days later.
