FAIRMONT — The former president of Fairmont Rural Fire Department has been charged with embezzlement.
According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, Charlie Ray Hunt was arrested Tuesday. The statement did not say how much money he is accused of stealing from the department.
The statement, which was sent by sheriff’s Maj. Anthony Thompson, said Hunt unlawfully and willfully committed a felony by using the department’s debit card. On the night of his arrest, the 50-year-old was voted out of his position as vice president by the fire department’s general membership. He had served previously as president.
The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation after it was contacted by Stephanie Chavis, Robeson County’s fire marshal, who said there were discrepancies in an audit of the department’s finances. The Robeson County Board of Commissioners requires the annual audit in order for fire departments to receive money from the county.
Hunt made bond before he arrived at the jail, so The Robesonian was unable to get a photograph of him. The investigation continues.
