HILLSBOROUGH — Authorities say second-degree murder charges have been filed against a 20-year-old UNC student accused in a wrong-way crash that killed three people.
Multiple media oulets report the additional charges were filed Thursday against 20-year-old Chandler Michael Kania of Asheboro. Authorities say Kania’s vehicle was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 in Hillsborough on Sunday when it hit a car.
Killed were 49-year-old Felicia Harris of Charlotte, 46-year-old Darlene McGee of Charlotte and 6-year-old Janiece Smith of New York. A 9-year-old suffered serious injuries.
Kania earlier was charged with driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving and possession of alcohol by a person under the age of 21.
Kania’s family has said in a statement that their prayers are with the victims and their families.
