RED SPRINGS — A Maxton man has been jailed after leading Red Springs police on a long car chase that ended when his vehicle struck a patrol car, according to Capt. Kevin Locklear.

According to Locklear, Red Springs officers were conducting routine patrols on Friday afternoon when they received a call from dispatch that a person who was wanted by the state Department of Public Safety’s Probation and Parole division had been seen at a Citgo station.

La-Amel Clarence McDougald, 25, saw the officer on Fourth Avenue and fled, running a stop light, Locklear said. The officer activated his lights and McDougald kept driving.

McDougald led police on a 30- to 45-minute chase that ended near Fourth Avenue and Main Street when he ran into a patrol vehicle, Locklear said. Locklear said he was unsure what speeds the vehicles reached, but that no one was injured during the chase.

The patrol car suffered minor damage. An officer injured his finger while taking McDougald into custody, Locklear said.

McDougald, whose address is listed as Mt. Zion Church Road in Maxton, is charged with felony eluding arrest, felony speeding to elude arrest, assault on a government official and damaging property. On Monday afternoon, several traffic violations were pending against McDougald.

McDougald is being held at the Robeson County Detention Center without bond because he was wanted by Probation and Parole and because of the felony elude charge, Locklear said.

According to Department of Public Safety Records, McDougald had been under supervised release after serving six and a half years in prison for armed robbery. He was released from prison in December.
