RENNERT — An 11-year-old boy from Lumber Bridge was killed by a suspected drunken driver while riding his bicycle on Tuesday night, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Aiden Lupo was struck at about 6:30 p.m. on Russell Road near Rennert.
Lupo’s friend, Jacoby Locklear, 14, was steering the bike, and Lupo was riding on the handle bars when James Bradford Davis, 38, sped around the curve and struck the boys with his 1995 Buick passenger car, according to the state Highway Patrol. The vehicle then overturned.
Lupo and Davis were taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center. Lupo died at the hospital, and Davis was arrested after being treated for minor injuries. Locklear was flown to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Dillon, South Carolina, where he was expected to undergo surgery this morning.
The speed Davis was traveling was not immediately available.
Davis was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired and reckless driving. He was taken to Robeson County jail after being discharged from the hospital, the Highway Patrol said. Davis’ car, which was valued at about $6,000, was destroyed.
