LUMBERTON — A Fairmont principal has submitted his resignation after being transferred to a different school, a move that prompted a petition purported to have more than 300 signatures.
It was announced during a special meeting of the Public Schools of Robeson County Board of Education this morning that Charles Locklear would not be taking the position of principal at Rex-Rennert Elementary School. Locklear worked at Fairgrove Middle School. His transfer was one of several approved during a July 28 school board meeting.
Locklear was not at the meeting this morning, but Tommy Lowry, who was named superintendent during the same meeting, announced the resignation after an hour-long closed session. Sandra Oxendine will serve as interim principal at Rex-Rennert.
Dozens of Fairgrove Middle School students, parents and staff met at the Public Schools of Robeson County central office on Monday to ask that Locklear not be transferred. Those present credited him with turning school performance around and serving as a father-figure to many students.
Peggy Wilkins, a school board member who represents the district that Fairgrove is located, told the group only a superintendent could change principal assignments. Lowry said he would stand by his decision to transfer Locklear, but said he would consult with the board attorney on whether the board could overturn that decision.
The group had planned to send a representative to the next board meeting on Aug. 11.
