LUMBERTON — No one was injured when shots were fired from a car stopped at a traffic light on Water Street on Tuesday evening, according to the Lumberton Police Department.

According to Capt. Terry Parker, witnesses say they were stopped at the traffic light at the intersection on Water Street and Fifth Street at about 5:40 p.m. when another car pulled up beside them, and someone inside fired shots in their direction.

Rex Chappell, 47, Sonny Sinclair, 45, and Christy Worley, 36, were not injured by the gunfire, but Chappell’s vehicle was struck by bullets twice, Parker said.

Parker said it’s unclear whether the three people, or the vehicle they were riding in, had been targeted.

Jermaine Buick, 25, was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle. Buick, who lives in Victoria Estates in Lumberton, was jailed under a $50,000 secured bond.

According to Parker, Chappell followed Buick’s vehicle for several blocks on Carthage Road and was later met by police.
