MAXTON — The Maxton Board of Commissioners on Tuesday discussed a mitigation package from the North Carolina Department of Transportation that will allow the town to “enhance the area” around the CSX railroad crossing on North Third Street, according to Town Manager Angela Pitchford

The discussion followed the commissioners’ decision in July to close the crossing.  Suggested upgrades include the extension of a fence at the crossing,  paving the street and $10,000 worth of repairs to the administration building.

“They had to decide what they wanted to see over there,” Pitchford said. “It’s an ongoing process, so I can’t say exactly when that will begin.”

In other business, the board:

— Approved a policy that will require Maxton police officers to wear body cameras.

— Began its recently approved Employee Incentive Program by giving a gift card and certificate of recognition to Ricky Barton, who works in the town’s Public Works Department.

— Approved a conditional-use permit Parnell McQueen needs to open a church on Marada Road.

— Heard from Michael Mohamed, who said during public comment time that he and fellow residents will be “monitoring” the November election and “want to see something positive happen in the town.”

— Heard from resident Rodney Springer, who said that a candidate forum was being organized for the election.

— Heard from resident Nathaniel Malloy, who thanked the Maxton Police Department for its “quick response” in stopping a person who broke into his home.

— Held a public hearing for a Community Development Block Grant.
