RALEIGH (AP) — Changes to unemployment insurance laws that require more job search activities by benefit recipients are now headed to North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory.

There was no debate Thursday when the Senate voted 36-7 for the legislation. It followed a similar vote Wednesday. The House approved it last week.

The measure raises the minimum number of weekly job contacts a displaced worker must make from two to five to keep qualifying for benefits. Only a few states require at least five.

The bill also speeds the elimination of a tax surcharge on businesses to help build up reserves to cover future benefits. It also seeks to resolve an impasse with McCrory over a three-member board that handles final unemployment benefit appeals.
