LUMBERTON — A historic marker for the Thompson Institute will be unveiled at W.H. Knuckles Elementary School on Sept. 19.
Built to educate blacks in the post-Civil War era, the Thompson Institute was located where W.H. Knuckles Elementary now stands.
Descendants of the school’s founders applied to have an N.C. highway historical marker placed the site, which will be unveiled during a program in the W.H. Knuckles cafeteria on Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. The public is welcome to the program, which will include descendents of the school’s founders and students and elected officials.
W. H. Knuckles Elementary School is at 1520 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.
