LUMBERTON — The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office says a Pembroke woman appears to have died because of issues related to dialysis treatments before she crashed her vehicle on N.C. 72 on Monday morning.

The state Highway Patrol confirmed that Patricia Leach McArthur died because of a medical issues before her 2001 Ford ran off the road at about 7:45 a.m. on Monday. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

Maj. Anthony Thompson, chief of detectives for the Sheriff’s Office, said deputies were originally called to the wreck because it appeared she may have been shot.

“We conducted an investigation and determined that she wasn’t shot,” Thompson said.

McArthur was then taken to a hospital, where it was determined that she was a dialysis patient, Thompson said.

McArthur, who was 64, lived on North Chicken Road in Pembroke.

According to a report filed by Trooper C.S. Hunt, McArthur was traveling east on N.C. 72 near Evergreen Church Road when her vehicle ran off the road to the right, struck a ditch and came to rest at the edge of some woods.

About $3,500 in damage was done to the front of the truck.
