LUMBERTON — A Bladenboro man was arrested Wednesday in Lumberton and charged with killing his father’s fiancee, according to the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.

Marquail Allen Burney, 20, was arrested without incident in the parking lot of a Lumberton store at about 11 a.m. in Lumberton, according to a statement from Sheriff James A. McVicker.

Burney is accused of killing Crystal Dionne Cruz, who was engaged to Burney’s father, David Burney. The three lived together at 10235 N.C. 41 West, the statement said.

According to the statement, David Burney reported Cruz missing at about 11:37 p.m. on Tuesday, saying he came from from work and could not find her.

When deputies arrived, David Burney said his fiancee was missing and that his son had “left the home walking when he questioned him about her disappearance,” the statement said.

Soon afterward, deputies found Cruz’s body in a vehicle in the back yard of the residence, the statement said. According to the statement, Marquail Burney had stolen another vehicle from a local business and it was recovered at the time of his arrest.

“We are still collecting evidence and our investigation is continuing,” McVicker said in the statement. “We are coordinating our efforts with the District Attorney’s Office and I expect there will be additional charges forthcoming.”

Marquail Burney was charged with first-degree murder and placed in the Bladen County Jail without bond.
