CHADBOURN — Ken Waddell, who represents part of Robeson County in the N.C. House, will not seek a third term.

A Democrat, Waddell made his announcement in a statement Sunday night.

“The extraordinary requirements of time, money, and commitment to service will not allow me to spend the necessary time required to do the job at a level I consider a personal requirement and further my farming interests while continuing to support my family,” Waddell said.

The retired teacher and former Chadbourn mayor was first elected to the General Assembly in 2012. He also represents parts of Bladen and Columbus counties. Waddell is a vice chairman of the Transportation and Wildlife Resources committees. His other committee assignments include Agriculture and Health.

“I have enjoyed the privilege to serve the citizens of this district as well as those of my hometown of Chadbourn for the last 28 years. It has been an honor to serve each of you and I wish you the best as you continue to deal with the ordinary and extraordinary requirements of daily living,” Waddell said.

Republican Brenden Jones, a Tabor City businessman, announced in August that he will run in 2016 for the District 46 seat. He received 47 percent of the vote when he challenged Waddell in 2014.

Waddell said in the statement that he hopes his successor will “will put the interests of the ordinary citizens ahead of personal gain.”

“I also hope that one day I will see a N.C. that recognizes that all citizens regardless of race or economic status are allowed the opportunities for success that I was given. I fully intend to complete my term of service and will continue to address the concerns of any and all citizens in the district,” he said.
