Here is a number to remember — 1,437.

That is the number of children, all from 650 families, that staff at the Department of Social Services has deemed eligible to receive help from The Empty Stocking Fund. Truthfully, we expected more, but are glad the number is more modest, meaning our goal of providing all of them Christmas is realistic.

It requires that $71,850 be raised, enough to provide each child with a $50 voucher that can be redeemed at either Kmart of Roses.

We get $500 closer to that goal today with five new contributions, including $250 from Bobby and Margaret Stephens made in memory of loved ones. That is 10 more children checked off Santa’s list.

There is now $5,160 in the fund, but since 25 gifts have been for $50 or more, there is an additional $1,250 in match money that has not yet been reported.

If you would like to contribute, donations can be made at our office at 2175 Roberts Ave. in Lumberton or mailed to that address, c/o The Empty Stocking Fund. The Robesonian will publish photographs with donations of $500 or more.
