CHARLOTTE (AP) — A Charlotte doctor accused of molesting patients during exams has been indicted on 12 sexual-assault-related counts involving nine patients.

George Laughrun, the attorney for suspect Dr. Fidelis Edosomwan, tells The Charlotte Observer that most of the counts against the 52-year-old doctor are for second-degree sexual offense, a felony. Several other counts are for misdemeanor sexual battery.

Edosomwan has denied the charges since he was arrested in January 2015 and accused of molesting two patients.

After the arrest, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police encouraged others to come forward, resulting in more than 40 reports being filed against Edosomwan by March 2015. Authorities said the cases stretched back seven or eight years.

The Mecklenburg District Attorney’s office did not disclose on Thursday why Edosomwan was indicted on charges related to just nine patients.
