LUMBERTON — The Lumberton City Council on Monday will hold five public hearings on proposed projects, including a large-scale solar installation.

Two hearings will be held regarding a solar farm on Snake Road, one to request rezoning and another for a conditional-use permit FLS Energy needs to build the 6.5-megawatt facility. The average number of homes a single megawatt can power is 164, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, meaning the Snake Road project could power about 1,066 homes.

The Planning Board is expected to recommend that the City Council approve the requests, with the conditions that the company comply with the city’s mowing requirement and install and maintain a vegetative buffer, among other stipulations.

The 51-acre site is near the intersection of Snake and McPhail roads.

The City Council in January approved rezoning and conditional-use permit requests for a 5-megawatt solar farm that will be built off of Colony Drive, but not without some discussion. Some council members raised concerns that Strata Solar had not done enough to seek input from nearby residents and placed several conditions on the company, including that it can never remove trees on the eastern side of the lot and that it must meet with the council before the solar panels’ lifetime runs out to discuss future plans for the site.

In another hearing Monday, Christopher Collins is seeking a conditional-use permit that he needs to have more than 10 cows on his 30-acre property on Saddletree Road near Greenview Drive.

A second hearing will be held on a request from Tony Paylor to rezone property on Kenny Biggs Road for a trucking business and barber shop and a hearing will be held on whether to annex property between Roberts Avenue and Old Whiteville Road.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. council chambers on the third floor of City Hall.
