LUMBERTON — The state Highway Patrol is looking for information about a hit-and-run accident that killed a Fairmont High School football player on Saturday.

Austen Stevie Ray Collins, 17, died Saturday evening after being struck by a car while he was walking on Wire Grass Road near Lumberton, according to a report by Trooper Chad Covington.

According to 1st Sgt. Jeremy Brewington, a person found Collins in the roadway and called 911 at about 7:15 p.m.

Troopers are looking for a vehicle with damage to the front left side. Anyone with information is asked to call the Highway Patrol at 910-618-5555.

“If you have any information on the accident or about a vehicle with damage to the left front please call us,” Brewington said.

According to an obituary posted by The News Reporter in Whiteville, Collins previously lived in Chadbourn. He is survived by his parents and three siblings.
