OCRACOKE (AP) — High water and sand have caused officials to close a portion of N.C. 12 on Ocracoke Island and also to suspend ferry service to and from Hatteras Island.

N.C. Department of Transportation officials say the highway is closed for three miles from the ferry terminal and heading south toward the village because water and sand cover N.C. 12 near the terminal that serves Ocracoke and Hatteras islands. Spokeswoman Nicole Meister says no homes or businesses are located in the area where the road is closed.

High water and sand have also caused a section of N.C. 12 to be closed in Kitty Hawk between Bickett and Byrd streets.

Both road closures and the ferry service suspension are in effect until at least Wednesday morning.
