LUMBERTON — A Fairmont man was killed in a wreck that shut down southbound Interstate 95 in Lumberton Thursday night, according to the Lumberton Police Department, and two others suffered severe injuries.

The wreck happened at about 8:27 p.m. when the driver of a commercial vehicle crashed through the guardrail separating north and southbound traffic near Exit 17 and collided with an SUV, according to Lumberton police Officer Cedrique Bridges, who is investigating the accident.

According to Bridges, Steven Parker ran off the right side of northbound I-95 and over-corrected, causing his 2006 International truck to cross the median through the metal guardrail. The truck then collided with a 2002 Lincoln Navigator, driven by Carlos Alejandro Mendez De La Cruz, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

De La Cruz, 28, lived off of N.C. 904 in Fairmont. His SUV was totaled.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, but southbound I-95 was shut down for “several hours” as the scene was cleared, Bridges said.

Parker, 48, of Edgewood, Maryland, has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, exceeding a safe speed and failing to maintain lane control.

According to Bridges, it is not believed that Parker had been speeding in the 65-mph zone, but that he was driving too fast for the rainy conditions.

A passenger in Parker’s vehicle, Vernon Prim, of Maryland, is in critical but stable condition at an undisclosed hospital. A passenger in De La Cruz’s vehicle, who had not been identified Friday evening, was being treated for life-threatening injuries at an undisclosed hospital, Bridges said. Parker was treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital.

Bridges said the wreck is still under investigation and asks that anyone with information call him at the Lumberton Police Department at 910-671-3845.
