SAULSALITO, Calif. — Lumberton native Afeni Shakur, the mother of late hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur, died Monday in California, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed via Twitter Monday night that deputies had responded to a possible cardiac arrest at Shakur’s home in Saulsalito. The 69-year-old was transported to a hospital, where she died.

Shakur, who owned homes on Seventh Street and Trevor Lane in Lumberton, was known for her support of local organizations, including Robeson Community College, where she established a scholarship in honor of her mother. Among other charitable donations, she purchased playground equipment for W.H. Knuckles Elementary in South Lumberton in 2002.

After her son died, Shakur founded the Tupac Amaru Foundation, which supports art programs for children and teenagers. She also assisted in the establishment of We Care Workers, a youth church group in Lumberton.

The Marin County Coroner’s Office will lead the investigation to verify Shakur’s cause of death.

The Robesonian will continue to update this story as more information is available.
